  3. Luster
  4. Color
  5. Nacre quality
  6. Surface quality
  7. Matching

Remember, there is no specific standard for pearl grading. It differs from one company to another. Culture pearls are available in four main varieties akoya, freshwater, Tahitian, and South Sea. Each one is magnificent.

Akoya pearls are popular for their luster, shape and color. Luster defines the quality and quantity of light that reflects from pearls surface. This makes the pearls shine. It also indicates the amount of time pearls spent within mother oyster. Pearls that are harvested soon look good in the beginning but lasts for a few years. Akoya pearls are white and round but you can even find silver, blue, gold and baroques.

Freshwater pearls

Freshwater pearls are nurtured without any bead, so they are totally nacre. However, they have weird shapes and are not shiny. Actually, freshwater shell grows dozens of pearls in natural muted colors.

Tahitian pearls

Tahitian pearls are popular as black pearls but they are not truly black. It has a dark green color with peacock overtones. Bead is inserted within the oyster and it produces a round or baroque shaped pearls. Baroque pearls are preferred because light reflects from a lot of different angles. This allows the overtones to pop greatly.

South Sea Pearls

South Sea pearls are largest and very valuable pearls farmed in remote regions of Indonesia, Australia, Philippines, and other few countries. Oysters growing these marble-sized pearls are similar to the size of American dinner plate. The two types of oysters growing these pearls are gold-lip and silver-lip. The ultra-valuable gold pearls are gown in the former and silver, white pearls are nurtured in the latter. You make a statement wearing South Sea pearls.
